Tamera Mowry-Housley and her husband Adam’s home may be in Napa Valley, but the kitchen looks like it was plucked straight from the south.

The couple’s Northern California cook space didn’t start out that way, though. When they picked up the property in 2011, it included many features that didn’t suit the TV hosts and their children, Aden and Ariah—namely, a double-decker black granite island.

“The upper level was so high that I could barely reach the middle of it, and I’m six-three,” Adam told Wine Spectator. “So for Tamera, basically half of the island was unusable.”

The extra-large eyesore was replaced with a T-shaped (and appropriately tall) custom build that captured Tamera’s request for a “natural” aesthetic. Once the rustic centerpiece was complete, the rest of the room followed suit.

Along with architect Andrew Hill and their interior designer Tiffany De Tomasi, the pair installed wood ceiling beams and a wood statement range hood that lend a welcoming, rustic appeal. Separate subway tile and beadboard backsplashes also add to the farmhouse vibe, which comes full circle with the inclusion of white cabinets and galvanized pendant lights.

As for why she opted for the open and airy look, Tamera says it’s all about their surroundings in the Suisun Valley near their family’s winery.

“Nothing is too pristine,” she said. “I wanted to create that in our kitchen.”

Besides the bright gathering hub, their wine country getaway also boasts a gorgeous backyard overlooking the countryside and, naturally, a specially designed storage unit nestled beneath the stairs that can hold nearly 400 of their favorite sips.

“This is a perfect spot for a wine cellar,” Adam explained. “I found out that it was insulated so the wine stays at a constant temperature.”

Though the remodel was a labor of love, Tamera stands firm that her slow-and-steady approach was well worth it.

“I literally wanted to do one room and one space at a time,” she said. “I think that’s a very practical way of doing it.”
