Sarah Anderson’s family cabin on the outskirts of Amery, Wisconsin, is less than an hour’s drive north from her home, but that doesn’t mean the former vintage dealer won’t make a pit stop or two before she gets there. “I love any small-town vintage store, especially the crammed ones where you really have to dig,” she says. By the time Sarah’s husband, Jamie, and their two sons, Thatcher and Simon, arrive later in the day, the fun and games kick in—usually with a round of I Spy. “I’m always adding decor or moving stuff around. I’ll say, ‘There’s something different in this room. Can you guess what it is?’ ”
For the past eight years, the Andersons have spent summer weekends fishing, kayaking, and otherwise whiling away the days at their shoreline inlet on Pike Lake. Until last year, the Andersons bunked for the night in a 450-square-foot seasonal cabin they bought off Craigslist. “I started to wonder what it would be like to be up here year-round,” Sarah says of the couple’s decision to give away their old cabin (the new owners paid to have it relocated).
Although they started fresh, you’d be hard-pressed to guess their getaway is new. The couple worked with architect Michael Huber to blend their at-odds styles into the design, which Sarah calls “vintage modern.” “Jamie is more shiny and new, while I love crusty and old,” Sarah says. But they share an affection for wit, and the home evokes just the right amount of humor they craved—from fez hat-wearing taxidermy to highball glasses emblazoned with some seriously bad dad jokes.
When they aren’t at the cabin, the Andersons encourage renters (check out their Instagram @thebackwater_wi) to embrace the quirk in their own playful way. They’ve even received snapshots of visitors wearing faux fur hats and binoculars while sitting in a canoe, as if they’re channeling Moonrise Kingdom (which, quite fittingly, was directed by another prop-loving Anderson).
Keep reading to see how Sarah gave her home its playful summer camp vibe.
