It’s that time of year when it’s socially acceptable (you might even say expected) to decorate your front door with spiders, bats, and crows, to eat Halloween treats and candy all day long, and to go out in public dressed up as your favorite superhero. But before you lug your store-bought Halloween decorations out of the attic and squeeze as many painted pumpkins as you possibly can onto your front porch, you'll want to make sure your front door is prepped and ready for trick-or-treaters and party-goers. And what better way to accomplish that than with the perfect Halloween wreath?

If you’re really itching to make a ghoulishly good decorative statement leading up to Halloween, a DIY Halloween wreath is the sure bet way to do so. And with our simple, easy-to-make ideas, which include everything from grapevine wreath nestled with crows, foam forms studded with spiders, and colorful Halloween mesh wreaths, you'll be ready to impress in no time. Stay true to the holiday’s dark and moody theme with cobwebs, bats, and even faux ravens, or make trick-or-treaters of all ages feel welcome with an adorable one-eyed monster wreath or sophisticated and colorful dried corn wreath. Textured wreaths—including one made from pretty pieces of Halloween paper and a black cat-shaped door hanging—are another fun way to add 3-D flair to your outdoor Halloween decorations. Here's to a craftier, spookier season!

1

Moss and Mini Pumpkin Wreath

Create a textural wreath by incorporating different types of moss, such as Spanish moss, preserved forest moss, and dried tree lichen.

To make: Cover a 12- to 16-inch foam wreath form with clumps of moss and lichen, attaching with hot-glue. Glue tiny bits of moss and lichen around the stems of mini white pumpkins, then secure to the wreath with floral pins and wire.

2

Witch's Boots

Toto and Dorothy will thank you for stealing the Wicked Witch of the West's boots! Proudly display her demise by hanging them on your front door.

To make: Hammer a nail into your door. Hang vintage or new Victorian era style boots from their laces. Hang a bow (ours is made from jute upholstery tape) just above the nail with heavy-duty double-sided tape.

3

Cat Wreath

This silly and sweet cat wreath is just puuurfect for decorating your front door this season. And the bow tie makes him extra sweet so trick-or-treaters won't get scared away!

To make: Wrap 14-inch foam wreath form with wide black ribbon, securing with floral pins as you go, until completely covered. Cut two 10-inch lengths of 18-gauge craft wire. Poke holes in top of wreath for ears. Bend wire to make ear shapes, and insert into wreath form. Wrap wire ears with ribbon, using hot glue to secure. Add orange burlap bow.

Keep the blood suckers away with a wreath fashioned from fresh garlic cloves (you can use artificial garlic if you want to keep the wreath from year to year).

To make:
Start by hot gluing moss to a wooden wreath form. Next glue garlic cloves, root side out, on top of the moss. Hang using a piece of natural jute ribbon.

Black Magic Vintage Frame

This upcycle craft is scary-good. We recommend hanging under a covered area so it will be protected from the elements.

To make: Remove the glass from a vintage frame (the more ornate the better!) and lightly sand the surface. Spray paint black and let dry.

Cut a length of ribbon and hot glue it to the back of the frame to create a hanger. (If your frame is heavy, you can use a staple gun to attach the ribbon or use traditional picture hanging wire as the main support.) Cut a second length of ribbon and tie a bow in the center of the hanger.

Download and print the "Beware!" calligraphy clip art onto cardstock (you can either frame the lettering or create a simple paper scroll by rolling the paper and using glue to hold in place). Download and print out the Halloween bugs onto cardstock. Cut out and fold at the joints to create dimension, then glue onto the frame.

Creepy Crawly Spider Web Wreath

Weave a spooky web this Halloween using a mason jar lid, chopsticks, and cotton string. Creepy crawly bugs at a ghoulish factor.

To make: Start by spray painting the metal lid from a large-mouth canning jar black. Next, spray paint a handful of plastic bugs whatever color you want. Next, hot glue 12 black chopsticks, evenly spaced, to the center of the metal circle with a good amount of hot glue and let dry.

Taking a 17-inch length of cotton rope or string, wrap it around the chopstick once and continue to the next and wrap it around until you have gone around all the chopsticks. Hot glue the end where you glued the beginning and trim the excess rope. Take another length of rope about five inches more than the previous and repeat about an inch-and-a-half away from the previous circle of rope. Repeat until you get to the end of the chopsticks. Add your painted bugs in the center with hot glue, as well as a few spiders on the outside of the web.

Plaid Fall Wreath

Plaid shirts and autumn leaves go together like Thanksgiving and turkey! We love the idea of celebrating both of those fall staples in one cheerful wreath.

Make the wreath: Trace leaf stencils onto double-stick fusible webbing, then fuse them to plaid fabric and cut out leaf shapes. Next, fuse the cutout leaves to felt, and cut out once more. Finally, wrap a foam wreath form with ribbon and attach the leaves with push-pins or hot glue, mixing the plaid and felt sides. Hang with a strip of plaid fabric.

An all-black wreath? We normally wouldn't dream of it, but on Halloween, anything goes! This witchy craft is anything but welcoming, but it'll delight all the trick-or-treaters in town.

Make the wreath: Cut 150 6-inch-long strips of 2-inch-wide black grosgrain ribbon. Fold the strips in half and attach them to a 16-inch foam wreath form with straight pins, layering them on top of each other to create a ruffle effect. Cut out a silhouette of a witch from black kraft paper. Attach it to the center of a 16-inch round clear piece of acrylic with double-sided tape. Hot-glue the edges of the acrylic round to the back of the wreath form. Finish with a bow with long tails.

Retro candy makes for a stunning addition to any front door. The challenge here, of course, is not eating it before you begin your crafting!

Make the wreath: Gather an assortment of old-fashioned candies in autumnal shades such as yellow, orange, and magenta. Wrap a 14-inch foam wreath form in white ribbon. Attach candy with hot-glue, layering and overlapping as you go. Finish with a yellow burlap bow.

DIY Spider Halloween Wreath

Keep things simple—but spooky—with an all-white wreath. Tiny faux spiders decorate the edges of this fun craft.

Make the wreath: Tie six pieces of white string across a 14-inch foam wreath form, making sure to loop each one at the midway point of the first piece attached to create a central point. (This is the base of the web and should have 12 “spokes.”) Tie a long piece of string to the center point; weave and loop from the center out to create the web. If you run out of string, tie another piece to the end and continue weaving. When you reach the wreath form, tie off at your ending point. Move the twine up and down to create uneven gaps in the web.

Wrap the wreath form with white burlap ribbon and attach faux spiders with hot-glue. Loop a piece of white burlap ribbon around the form to hang.
