12 Products We Love Because Our Moms Loved Them First

Whether it's a smile or laundry detergent, we all have something we get from our mom.

Over the years, I have found myself in many situations where I think to myself, “My mom was right.” Ugh. That dreaded phrase we all run from growing up but often find ourselves coming back to. And thank God for that.

It’s made me realize that we all have something we’ve picked up from our mothers or maternal figures. My small brown eyes? From my mom. My ability to bust a move? I got it from my mama! But it’s not just genetics we get from these women, it’s recipes and bakeware, gardening tips and good book recommendations, the way we do our laundry to how we cook a meal.

It's the moms, grandmas, and aunties of this world who came before us so we can learn a thing or two from them along the way. Though we may not always agree on the same things, it's pretty common to take away a little something from these women who helped raise us. So, if you put matches in your mouth to fight the tears when cutting onions (seriously, try it), or you use potato flakes in your bread starter, you probably got it from someone who probably got it from someone else who probably got it from their mama!

I talked with my fellow editors at Country Living to find out if there is anything they now use because of the moms in their own lives. Some had funny memories of burning frozen meals that made them never want to buy a microwavable dish again—understandable. While others were surprised to realize they have a few staples they always repurchase—a habit they picked up from a mom.

“My mom always had one of these in her purse. And when my Lip Smackers or Bonne Bell Flip Gloss wasn't doing the trick for my chapped lips in the winter, this is what I reached for and it always did the trick. It hydrates lips without leaving a big sheen the way vaseline would, which I appreciate even more now that I'm an adult and don't always want look like I have layers and layers of lip gloss on.”

“Much like Madonna, my mother's favorite candle is Votivo's famous Red Currant. Even though the scent has been around for decades, I'm still not tired of it. I burn through one of these candles at least once a month!”

"Over the years, my mom and I would go get our nails done for special occasions and every time she would ask for OPI's Cajun Shrimp. And every summer she would get out a big bag filled with colorful bottles and cotton balls. She would pull out the same color and use it religiously. Now, I love the pop of red on my nails too."

“I spent a lot of time at my grandparent's house, studying my grandmother's every move in the kitchen as she cooked meals big enough to feed a small army. One appliance always sat on the counter and got plenty of use—a classic KitchenAid Stand Mixer. I was always happy to assist in the kitchen and serve as a taste tester of pies, cakes, and casseroles. These days, I have my very own mixer that I use religiously and cherish, along with those early memories of time in the kitchen with my sweet grandmother, Annie Pearl.”

"I simply refuse to believe that anything cleans better than Comet. My mom used this on our bathrooms at least once a week growing up. When I moved to New York City, she sent me boxes of the ever-fresh-smelling green powder in the mail because my local bodgea didn't carry it. Luckily, I live in Alabama now where Comet is easy to come by!”

"My mother always told me that Heaven smelled like gardenias. Well, I think Heaven probably smells like her perfume (which, also has notes of gardenia!). She fell in love with this scent when she and my dad went to Paris back in the 1980s and it's been a staple of her, and now my, beauty routine ever since. It's a splurge but you can't beat the beautiful design of the bottle coupled with the absolute amazing smell."

"I have so many sweet memories of visiting my grandparent's home in Alabama growing up. Every time I stepped foot in their tiled bathroom the smell of oranges filled the air. I've always loved the scent and how clean it made the bathroom feel. While I don't use the same spray my Mawmaw Evelyn used, I always have citrus essential oils or a citrus candle placed in my bathroom to replicate a similar feeling."

"For any special occasion, my grandmother always wore White Diamonds. The first perfume I ever asked for as a gift was a bottle of it because she wore it and I wanted to be just like Grandmama. I don't wear perfume often now, but I do keep a bottle on my vanity just to smell it because it reminds me of her."
