Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, and it can be a very busy time for many. Whether you're planning a last-minute trip to the beach, a neighborhood cookout, or getting ready to send the kids back to school, you'll likely need to do some shopping, and you need to know what stores are open and closed on the holiday.

But first, let's talk about why you should care in the first place—besides just needing to know if you can run to the liquor store when the drink supply starts dwindling. After all, Labor Day is a holiday during which we honor, well, laborers. You can thank members of the 19th century labor movement for this glorious three-day-weekend. It was first celebrated back in 1882 to give everyone a much needed break and celebrate the working man's contribution towards the betterment of our country. So, it's basically your civic duty to keep your computer closed until Tuesday, right?

Even though the whole point of Labor Day is that everyone gets a day off work, that is not true for all. While you're soaking up the last days of summer, many big box retailers and chain stores stay open, as do most restaurants. Due to the holiday's federal status, it's federal workers who are almost certainly guaranteed an extra 24 hours tacked onto their weekend; the rest of the working population's weekend plans are less certain (in other words, don't book that beach vacation just yet).

Just in case you need it, we've got the most updated list of Labor Day 2023 store openings and closures right here. We'll keep updating this page in the weeks leading up to the holiday, so be sure to check back for the most up-to-date information.

What stores are closed on Labor Day?

While most national chains are open on Labor Day, a lot of your locally owned stores and restaurants will be closed. Check their websites or social media accounts for updated information. There is one major exception: Costco is closed on Labor Day.

Are liquor stores open on Labor Day 2023?

By law (and often because their liquor sales and distribution are controlled by the state), most liquor stores are, in fact, closed on Labor Day.

But there are many exceptions to this rule. If the store in question is not state-controlled, for one thing, it could remain open at the discretion of its owner.

As reported by Legal Beer, the following states do not have state-controlled liquor sales and distribution: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin.

Still, you're better off just checking with your local store. In Kansas, for instance, liquor sales are not state-controlled, but liquor stores are closed by law on Labor Day as well as Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a few other holidays.

Are banks open on Labor Day 2023?

For the most part, no. You can expect most bank branches to be closed for business on Monday, September 4, because Labor Day is considered a bank holiday. But while brick and mortar locations won't be available, you can continue to use digital ATMs and online banking services as usual.

Is the post office open or closed on Labor Day 2023?

Labor Day is a postal holiday, which means post offices are closed. You shouldn't expect mail to be delivered on this day. Because Labor Day is an official federal holiday, all state and federal government offices should be closed on this day as well. (School's out too!)
