Philodendrons are some of the prettiest low-maintenance houseplants you can grow. With hundreds of species and cultivated varieties, or cultivars, this tropical houseplant genus offers something for everyone.

There are many varieties of philodendron, too. There are green, golden, variegated or pinkish foliage, and they come in mounding or climbing forms.

Even better, most types of philodendrons are fuss-free. (Here are all the philodendron care tips you'll need.)

“They hold up well to missed waterings and have thick leaves so they don’t need super-high humidity levels,” says Justin Hancock, horticulturalist with Costa Farms. “The common ones are very accessible, so you’ll find them at your favorite local plant shop, even if it has limited offerings. They’re great for both beginners and enthusiasts.”

Philodendrons are happiest in bright, indirect light, though some will adapt to low or medium light levels, says Hancock. But they absolutely don’t like to stay soggy.

Before you water, stick your finger into the soil. If it still feels slightly wet and soil sticks to your finger, wait a few days and check again. Your aim is to let the top few inches of soil dry out before you give it a long drink. Also, make sure the pot has drainage holes so the roots don’t drown.

One other note: Unfortunately, according to ASPCA, these plants are toxic to pets and contain insoluble calcium oxalates, which can cause oral irritation, pain and swelling of the mouth, drooling and GI upset. If you know you have a nibbler, check out our list of pet-friendly plants instead.
