Of all the areas of your home, it's safe to say the mudroom gets the most foot traffic. It's a space that's constantly in use, but one that's easy to overlook in terms of its potential.

But Ashley Harding, the blogger behind Vintage Refined, is showing us just how lovely this "afterthought room" can be. She transformed her previously ho-hum mudroom into a beautiful and highly functional area that now includes a dog shower, beadboard storage lockers, and plenty of room for laundry.

Before the remodel, Ashley's mudroom was outdated, dark, and impractical.

Ashley was determined to turn it into a multi-purpose room that would meet her family's needs. To accomplish this, almost every piece you see in the room now was custom made. The storage lockers, the shelving, and the laundry unit were all hand-built and designed for the space. It's a strategy that sounds costly, but Ashley says it actually helped her save money.

"If you're going for a similar look in your own home, don't think you have to buy expensive custom made cabinets and shelves," Ashley explains. "All of the built-ins in our mudroom were constructed using lumber from the Home Depot. With a good design and a skilled carpenter, you can save yourself a lot of money, yet still achieve a high end look."

If you want to tackle your own mudroom renovation, Ashley says making a priority list is key. "Break it down into needs and wants," she recommends. "It is important to determine what exactly you want to store (sports equipment, outdoor ware, cleaning supplies, etc.). Once that has been determined, it's easier to decide what kind of storage will work best. Because this room is so large, I created various storage areas throughout the room. This gave each area an identity."
