Chalk paint is good for more than just crafting—as it turns out, it was the key to making this remarkably inexpensive kitchen makeover possible.
With a $250 budget, blogger and Etsy seller Avery Michaels from Alta, Iowa completely transformed her dark kitchen into this vibrant and happy space, sharing the whole project on her blog Holland Avenue Home. Instead of gutting the kitchen, this DIYer opted to use chalk paint to refresh the room.
Avery and her pastor husband recently moved into a house maintained by their church, and they wanted to fix up the kitchen without spending a ton of money. Before, the poorly lit kitchen featured dated cabinets and materials left over from its last renovation, in the 1980s.

Avery decided to use her favorite hue—a soft blue—throughout the space. "As I browsed Pinterest for inspiration, I undoubtedly gravitated towards bright kitchens with a lot of color—specifically that perfect shade of blue green," she wrote on her blog. "I decided to be true to my own style instead of what is currently trendy, and I am so glad that I did. I wholeheartedly believe that nothing you truly love will ever go out of style." Now, the kitchen features two-toned cabinetry, plus fresh paint on the backsplash, walls, window, and trim.
After updating with paint, Avery also installed new gold hardware to the cabinetry and added a colorful, patterned rug to cover up the old linoleum floors. Though a rug may seem an odd choice for a kitchen, the bold pattern makes it perfect for disguising any spills or stains.
To finish the room, Avery personalized the space with several colorful and unique accessories—a strategy that Joanna Gaines uses, too. She even set up a small coffee bar, which makes the cheerful room even more welcoming.
