When they first started popping up on Pinterest, people couldn't seem to get enough of barndominiums, or barns converted into living spaces. The countryfied craze reached peak popularity when Chip and Joanna Gaines featured one on Fixer Upper. But now, there's a new hybrid in home design, and it's called the cabiminium.
While barndominiums combined barns with condominiums, a cabiminium, of course, links the latter with cabin. Realtor.com spotted one such property (pictured) on the market for $649,000 in Banner Elk, North Carolina.
"A cabiminium is a single-family structure and is similar to a condominium," Karen Cleghorn of Blue Ridge Realty and Investments, the realtor listed, tells CountryLiving.com. "Where the owner of a condo owns everything within the interior walls of the unit, with a cabiminium, the owner owns everything around the footprint of the exterior of the building. The rest is common area and maintained like a condominium."
The term was coined and trademarked by brothers Mark and Will Adkins, founders of The Waterfront Group and developers of a community in nearby Eagles Nest, North Carolina.
Cleghorn calls cabiminiums a "hot commodity" in the area, which she says is a popular place for resort and second homes, and the listing itself touts the concept as "the newest craze in cozy mountain living." Indeed, we're told there are a few cabiminiums like this one for sale in Eagles Nest.
Time will tell if the trend catches on elsewhere!
