A beachfront home in Santa Monica built for silent film actress Norma Talmadge and subsequently owned by reclusive business magnate Howard Hughes and Hollywood legend Cary Grant is being offered for sale. Scroll down to see inside the unique property.
The compound sits directly on Santa Monica Beach.
Its address is 1038 Palisades Beach Road.
The 5,530-square-foot main house was built in 1930 for silent film actress Norma Talmadge.
Princess Grace of Monaco, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Sharon Tate are a few of the stars rumored to have visited or stayed there.
The motor court has a four-car garage and a private gate leading to a courtyard.
The back garden includes a heated swimming pool and a paddle tennis/pickleball court.
Grant and his friend, actor Randolph Scott, reportedly purchased the house in the 1930s.
When Grant married Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton in 1942, she moved into the house, too.
Hutton "transformed the dining room to replicate the Parisian restaurant Maxim’s," the Wall Street Journal reports.
The current owner preserved many of the home's original details, but removed the barbed wire on the top of the fence that Hughes had installed.
Jennifer Diener purchased the home 38 years ago with her husband Royce, who died in May 2017 after serving as president & CEO of American Medical International. He was also a board member for the L.A. Philharmonic and UCLA Medical Center. The couple reportedly paid $750,000 for the house.
There are Pacific Ocean views from many of the rooms.
The large master bedroom suite has ocean views, along with a sitting area, office, dressing areas, and two bathrooms with original tiles.
Four additional second-story bedrooms include staff quarters with a separate entrance.
They overlook the Santa Monica Pier.
