Nothnagle Cabin, in Gibbstown, New Jersey, is the oldest log cabin in the United States. Built around 1638, the house is now open for tours and on the market. Current owners Harry and Doris Rink have lived in an adjacent 18th-century house since 1968, and here's the catch—they want to be able to stay on the property and continue giving tours of the cabin for the rest of their lives. The house sits at 406 Swedesboro Road in Gibbstown, New Jersey.
The community is directly across the Delaware River from the Philadelphia International Airport.
The cabin was built by Finnish immigrants sometime between 1638 and 1643.
It's listed on both the National and State Historic Registers and is reportedly among the oldest home of its type in the Western Hemisphere.
The cabin is 1,800 square feet.
Over the years, the Rinks have welcomed thousands of visitors.
"These have included Ambassadors, Consulate Generals, Congressmen, Governors, Authors, Professors, Archaeologists and Historians in addition to those visiting for their thirst for knowledge," according to the listing.
The asymmetrical fireplace "is typical of Scandinavian cabins from that time period," Harry Rink told the New York Times.
"We know the ironwork for hanging pots in the fireplace is from the 1590s and was brought from Finland," Rink said. "The bricks in the fireplace were probably brought over as ballast on a boat that brought the immigrants."
The Rinks restored the home.
"You couldn't see any of the original logs when I started working on it," Harry said. "We removed the plaster on the inside and took the ivy off the outside. I had to push some of the logs back in because they were bowed out from the ivy pulling on them. It would have collapsed eventually. Now the cabin walls are visible just like when it was built. I took up the floor and reinforced it and then put it back. I found a 240-year-old boot, toys, a fork, an iron thimble and other things under the floor. They are in a case in the cabin. I also reinforced the roof."
It's free to visit, and the Rinks have been giving tours since 1973, the year they were married.
"Every day is a new adventure, and a new learning," Doris Rink said. Harry especially likes "to have the school kids here" and he enjoys pointing out "how people lived and what they grew in the area."
The 1.3-acre lot also includes a gazebo, shed, and four-car garage.
While the home's washer, dryer, freezer, refrigerator, gas stove, and fixtures are included in the sale, three antique items—a tractor, anvil, and sweet potato cutter—are not.
For $2.9 million, it could be yours.
As long as you don't mind letting the Rinks (shown here) continue their tours.
